An overview of the DEA APE (Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies « Analyse et Politique Economiques »)
The DEA APE offers a thorough training in economics and a preparation for research, which compares with the top institutions in other countries. The complete training lasts for two years. When relevant, some students may be allowed to skip some of the steps in the program.
Starting from the academic year 2005-2006, the format of the DEA changes to a Master Degree; its first year becomes M1 and its second year M2. The first year is dedicated to basic courses. The second year is dedicated to specialized courses and research training. The diploma of the DEA (Master) is delivered at the end of this year.
See the detailed program of the Master. The Master is sponsored by four institutions, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS), Ecole de la Statistique et de l'Administration Economique (ENSAE), and Ecole Polytechnique . Other institutions may join the program in the future.
Students who have completed the Master with good marks are expected to begin to work toward their thesis in the "Ecole Doctorale APE". This Ecole Doctorale gathers the students from a small number of Master programs in Paris. They can be hosted, during their PhD by one of the research centers of the founding institutions (Paris-Jourdan : DELTA, CERAS, CEPREMAP, LEA, or the Laboratoire d'Econométrie of the Ecole Polytechnique, CREST (INSEE) and the Research Center of HEC).
Each student has an advisor during the first year (who needs not be the research supervisor of the second year).
European Doctoral Program
Since 1987, the APE doctoral program belongs in the European Doctoral Program (EDP) in economics, which gathers EHESS, the London School of Economics, the University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelone), the Florence European Institute, and the Universities of Bonn, Louvain and Tel-Aviv. PhD students of the APE can participate in the EDP program and spend a year in one of these institutions (usually the first year of their PhD). Applications to the EDP program have to be made during the second year (M2) of the Master APE. The selection is based on the grades obtained in the first and second year and the research project.Faculty
The faculty of the Master is drawn from its sponsor institutions and also includes some visitors.
